Most recently, I was having lunch with a Home Boy. He’s a local promoter. We just came from the radio station where we were cutting a commercial for a mutual client. He was sitting across from me at the table, yet gazing out of the window. I asked him “you a little distracted”? He replied, “yea man…I just want to get my music out there”.
I asked him the usual questions like, “what are you doing to get your music out there?” He replied with the usual (wrong) answers”
“Oh…man, first I’m gonna get a distribution deal. Then they’ll (the record label) will give me some money to promote my project”. I told him that record labels are bleeding money and that he shouldn’t count on a record label investing money to an unknown with no track record of success.
The challenge for me was trying to explain to him that he was making the mistakes that so many people before him have said to me. Luckily I was able to get him to listen to me while I told him what strategy to use to succeed in today’s music biz.
